Update Your Home Inventory
Now that the holidays are over it is time to update your home inventory. We suggest you do a digital inventory of your house, townhouse or apartment every year. An inventory will show an insurance adjuster what you have inside your home and can expedite the claims process. Plus, it is easy to forget what has been accumulated over the years so this will help jog your memory. Claims can sometimes be traumatic. Imagine how you would feel if your house sustained a large fire; you would be devastated. Remembering everything you have in your home may be difficult at such an emotional time.
We recommend you use your cell phone or camera and take pictures or video every room of your house. Open drawers, open closets and even do your garage. If you make large purchases, take a picture or scan a copy of the receipt and include it with your inventory. If you keep anything in an outside storage unit, take pictures of that as well. Also, be sure to contact us to ensure you are covered for your purchases. Save all of this online - do not save on the hard drive of your computer unless you have a back up. Remember that your computer or phone can be damaged, vandalized or stolen and what you have saved may not be accessible.
The Insurance Information Institute, has an app that can help you with this inventory. Visit them at www.III.org and look for the Know Your Stuff Home Inventory app.
